Belamoti Barman, a resident of Kusumbil village in Kokrajhar district, Assam, is an active member of the Pragati Self-Help Group. For the past 15 years, she has been cultivating paddy using traditional farming methods. Recently, AsHA introduced the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) using organic methods in her village. At first, Belamoti was unsure and confused about how SRI was different from her usual practices. With guidance and training from the AsHA team, she decided to try cultivating one bigha of land using the SRI technique. She followed the SRI principles carefully — planting young seedlings, maintaining wider spacing, applying organic compost, and controlling water efficiently.
