Anita Barman

A resident of Boalkamari village in Kokrajhar, Assam, has been cultivating paddy for over two decades. Member of the Ashirbad Self-Help Group, she has always shown a keen interest in learning new agricultural practice

When the AsHA organization introduced the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), Anita was curious but uncertain. The method required several changes from her traditional practices—transplanting younger seedlings, increasing spacing between plants, using less water, and applying organic fertilizers. These techniques felt unfamiliar and risky at first.

Encouraged and supported by the AsHA team, Anita decided to experiment with SRI on one bigha of her land. She carefully followed each step of the method. Over time, she began to notice a remarkable difference: her paddy plants grew stronger, developed healthier roots, and produced more tillers. Anita’s efforts paid off. Her yield increased significantly—from 540 kg per bigha with traditional methods to 750 kg per bigha using the SRI approach
